While doing consulting at a luxury hotel in SE Asia, we met an amazing leader.
In that area of the world, the people believe in ghost and spirits that return to Earth once a year.
However, sometimes those spirits do not return to
their celestrial homes but remanin on Earth and frighten the people.
This particular year at the newly opened hotel the employees kept feeling and seeing these spirits, became frightened, and decided to not come to work.
This authentic leader did not manage the situation by arranging for new employees or telling the people they had to come to work, he nurtured and enhanced as a leader.
He was a European man, not from this particular culture of ghosts
and spirits, but he decided to call in a geomancer who is a highly trained man with refined mathetical skills and able to understand the behavior of these spirits.
The geomancer determined that the angle of the doors allowed the spirits to enter and that the doors would need to be replaced and put in at an angle that would keep the spirits from entering.
This might sound a bit extreme but the result of this hotel manager's authentic leadership skills, and his understanding and appreciating a completely different culture, and his ability to adapt, turned a situation into one that people believed he deeply cared.
In Bill Geoge's book the Authentic Leader he says, "Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership. They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference than they are in power, money, or prestige for themselves. They are as guided by qualities of the heart, by passion and compassion, as they are by qualities of the mind."
